Most people didn’t know that patio covers are very useful for saving money on your utility bills.  They accomplish this in two ways.  First off, they reduce the temperature of your patio, which makes it easier for your air conditioning to cool your home off.  It won’t have to work so hard if it has a slightly cooler outdoor temperature at one corner of the house.

Particularly in a hotter state like Arizona, even a home that is well insulated can get hot fast if the outside air temperature is too hot.  So you want to make sure that you get your patio covers installed on a southern or western exposure.  However, it isn’t just  because they drop the temperature down a bit that they save you money on your electric bill.  There is also what you can attach to them.

Patio Covers and Solar Panels

In case you’ve been living in a cave the past twenty years, solar is a up and coming form of energy.  A lot of people are installing solar panels for clean, renewable energy.  To be effective, solar panels need to be anchored to a roof or a flat surface, and guess what patio covers are?  Both.  If you’re going to use patio covers for solar, however, be aware that when you are choosing to install your covers, you’re going to need to install solid patio covers, not lattice.

Why?  Well, for one, you want structural stability so that the panels can be secure.  Also, it is kind of silly to put an opaque solar panel on top of a lattice cover.  So be sharp and pick the right patio covers for your needs.

This concludes part two of our series on patio covers.  Be sure to read part one and part three as well.
