Home Additions Part 1: Patio Covers

Part one of a series on home additions explores solid patio covers.

Installing Solid Patio Covers: A Good Home Improvement

Install Patio Covers Scottsdale| (480) 926-2300

There are home improvement projects that improve your home on a couple of levels, and there are home improvement projects that not only make your home better, it adds to its resale value.  One such home improvement is to install solid patio covers.

In our next article, we will discuss another home improvement that adds resale value to your home, namely, an Arizona room, but for now, know that a solid patio cover is considered a major selling point.  Usually you’re not adding to your home’s existing square footage, but you are adding something that might make a buyer that is on the fence decide to buy your home from you.

Why Do Solid Patio Covers Matter?

Why should you get patio covers and why do solid patio covers matter?  Well, in a place such as Alaska where summers are mild, obviously a cover isn’t really a selling point, but in a hot desert environment like Arizona, they are definitely a big bonus.  It makes perfect sense if you think about it.

Arizona has extremely mild as well short winters, and warm daytime weather.  However, from April until October as a rule, Arizona isn’t warm.  It is be unbearably hot.  If you were a home buyer, wouldn’t you rather buy a home that had some sort of way of protection from the sun’s heat while still letting you be outside?

So remember, some home improvements are better than others.  A cosmetic home improvement might sell your home for you, but sometimes, you want an improvement with proven results, such as a solid patio cover.

This concludes part one of our series on patio covers.  Be sure to read part two and part three as well.

Patio Covers for Winter Part 2

Part two of a series on patio covers in Scottsdale explores whether you should use real plants or artificial ones.

Artificial Plants Under a Patio Cover in Scottsdale

Get a Covered Patio in Scottsdale | (480) 926-2300

Artificial plants have come a long way from the cheap plastic ones of the 1950’s-1970’s, and are a good way to decorate your covered patio.  There are several forms of artificial flowers, but the two most popular ones are polyester flowers and silk flowers.  Both polyester and silk flowers from a distance appear to look natural.  If you take care of your silk flowers, they can look natural for years to come.  Silk flowers are often used because they’re fire retardant, and require very little care to keep them looking nice.

You want to make sure that you treat your silk flowers with some sort of protective coating.  This will help to avoid them fading with exposure to the sun, and make clean up a breeze.  If you want to clean the silk flowers you’re using for your patio covers in Scottsdale, mist them with water, and wipe them down.  Replace your silk flowers every now and then as they will inevitably start to show their age.  If you don’t want to care for silk plants, you may want to get real plants instead.

Selecting Natural Plants for Your Covered Patio

If you want to use natural plants in lieu of artificial ones like polyester plants or silk for your covered patio, be sure you pick the right plants to use.  You’re going to want a combination of hanging plants as well as a container garden.  In addition, you want plants that will have foliage as well as flowers.  Some perennials are good as when they’re not in bloom they’re leafy green plants.

So whether you want to decorate your porch with artificial plants or real ones, just know how to care for them.  And make sure you have the place to put them: a covered patio in Scottsdale.

Be sure to read part one and part three of this series as well.

Get a Solid Patio Cover in Time for El Niño

A solid patio cover is more than shade from the sun, it is also protection from the elements. In an El Niño year, like 2013 is supposed to be, this could be very important.

Choosing the Right Patio Cover

Solid Patio Covers protect you from the elements
Solid patio covers protect you from the elements | (480) 926-2300

What does your patio cover have to do with El Niño? What is El Niño anyway?   Well according to Wikipedia:

El Niño–Southern Oscillation (pron.: /ɛlˈniːnjoʊ/, Spanish pronunciation: [el ˈniɲo], ENSO), or El Niño/La Niña–Southern Oscillation, is a band of anomalously warm ocean water temperatures that occasionally develops off the western coast of South America and can cause climatic changes across the Pacific Ocean. The ‘Southern Oscillation’ refers to variations in the temperature of the surface of the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean (warming and cooling known as El Niño and La Niña, respectively) and in air surface pressure in the tropical western Pacific. The two variations are coupled: the warm oceanic phase, El Niño, accompanies high air surface pressure in the western Pacific, while the cold phase, La Niña, accompanies low air surface pressure in the western Pacific.[2][3] Mechanisms that cause the oscillation remain under study.

The extremes of this climate pattern’s oscillations cause extreme weather (such as floods and droughts) in many regions of the world.[READ MORE]

One of the things that an El Niño year can affect is rainfall.  As in Arizona experiencing a lot more rain than normal, hailstorms, or maybe even a hurricane. With that in mind, why wouldn’t you want a solid patio cover?

A Solid Patio Cover: Shelter From the Storm

Don’t get us wrong, a lattice patio cover has its uses too.  If you have a container garden on your back patio, it’s good to let your plants get a bit of rainwater.  The nitrogen in rainwater helps plants thrive.

Yet with a solid patio cover, you get the best of both worlds, shade from the Arizona sun, and shelter from the storms that Arizona sometimes has.

Why You Should Get Alumawood Patio Covers

Patio covers in Arizona have to be made of good material to avoid the dangers of Arizona’s often curious weather patterns.  This article will show why Alumawood may be the answer.

Hurricanes in Arizona?  Get Alumawood Patio Covers

As to why you should pick a durable patio cover like Alumawood, they can withstand the effects of a hurricane better.  We know what you’re thinking.  A hurricane? In Arizona?  Yes.  It’s happened before.  Take a good look back to 1997, and the ravages of Hurricane Nora, as this Wikipedia article shows…

Hurricane Nora was only the third tropical cyclone on record to reach Arizona as a tropical storm. Nora was the fourteenth named tropical cyclone and seventh hurricane of the 1997 Pacific hurricane season. The September storm formed off the Pacific coast of Mexico, and aided by waters warmed by El Niño, eventually peaked at Category 4 intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.

Nora intensified and weakened quickly before taking an unusual path, which lead it to make landfall twice as a hurricane in Baja California. After landfall, its remnants affected the Southwestern United States with tropical storm-force winds, torrential rain and flooding. Nora is blamed for two direct casualties in Mexico, as well as substantial beach erosion on the Mexican coast, flash flooding in Baja California, and record precipitation in Arizona. Nora persisted far inland and eventually dissipated near the Arizona/Nevada border. [READ MORE]

Did you get that last part?  Nora didn’t break up until it reached Nevada.  Nora was a Category 4 hurricane, with sustained winds of about 100 miles per hour.  Can you imagine how dangerous that would be if you had a flimsy patio cover?  While Alumawood is not immune from hurricane damage, it is a lot more sturdy than say a balsa wood lattice. However it isn’t just hurricanes that can hit Arizona.

Alumawood Patio Covers and Arizona’s Extreme Weather

What about microbursts or tornados?  Remember the 2010 haboob that made it to YouTube?  What about the driving rain of monsoons?  An Alumawood patio cover is tough and flexible too, so it is far more likely to survive the extremes that Arizona can throw at it.

So what are you waiting for?  Call your patio cover installer in Phoenix today.
