Solar Power Myths:  You Have to Have Full Sun And Panels Are Expensive

Do you need direct sunlight for solar panels?  How this misconception started goes back to older panels of the 60’s and 70’s, where pretty much if a bird flew by it cut power to the house.  Modern solar panels, however, use daylight as opposed to sunlight.  Solar panels gather photons from the ambient light around them and convert them to energy.  In a way, they’re like big silver plants, only you don’t have to water them.  While direct sunlight gives solar panels the biggest concentration of photons obviously, they will still work in overcast conditions.  After all, look at Germany.  It is often overcast there yet they use solar power as part of their commitment to renewable power sources.   Modern solar panels have lenses and mirrors that make use of whatever light that reaches them.  Even streetlights can add a bit. Time for our next myth.  Solar panels are expensive.

Solar panels are only expensive if you’re looking at initial investment.  You do have to put down money to install panels of course, however, when you start looking at energy cost savings as we covered in our last article, you actually end up making your investment back in a decade or even less.  On the subject of investment, how long do solar panels last?

How Long Do Solar Panels Last?

A myth that is based on old information is still floating around.  Solar panels only last about five years and they have be replaced.  Not exactly.  Modern solar panels last between twenty and twenty five years.  So way past five years!  And that figure is just the cover on the panels.  If you recover your panels every twenty years, your solar panels will probably outlive you.

So remember, solar panels have come a long way from the bulky, low watt units of just a few years ago.  Now, you can have solar panels the thickness of a ream of paper that have dozens if not hundreds of solar cells to generate power for your home or business.  If you have questions about solar panels or how they’re installed, please give us a call.

Solar Panels: Renewable Energy for the 21st Century

Solar panels are big nowadays, and it makes sense for a lot of energy concerns.  Why? Well a big reason is the environment.

Renewable Energy and World Population

There is a big need for solar panel installation.  By 2050, the world population is supposed to top 8 billion people.  The more the population grows, the more pressure is put on the environment, particularly where energy sources are concerned.  Fossil fuels are expected to be depleted to the point of exhaustion in just a few decades.  Some power sources such as wind power are great in some areas, but not so great in others, and require bulky infrastructure.   Living so far inland, we obviously can’t make use of tidal power.  So what’s the solution?

That’s where solar power comes in.  Arizona is home to a few solar start-ups and producers because of how much sunshine we get every year.  It is sunny almost year round in Arizona.    Solar power makes sense in a place like here.  The fascinating thing about solar is that even countries that are often overcast such as Germany are making use of solar power because of advances in technology.   Another fun fact about solar power is that if you placed about 200 square miles of solar panels in somewhere like north Africa, you could power the entire planet! And why are people so interested in solar?  Well it is clean energy.  It doesn’t produce any greenhouse gases, nor does it produce any pollution.  The panels are completely recyclable and last for years if not decades.  And if environmental concerns aren’t enough, there is also the money you can save on your power bill.

Solar Panel Installation and Your Light Bill

In our last article we covered using the sun to your advantage with an Arizona room.  Why not take that methodology a step further and make the sun work for you? That’s where solar comes in.

Installing solar panels makes long term financial sense.  After the first year, you can save between 20 and 30% off your utility bill.  This spread out over time is a lot of money, particularly in the summer when utility bills can easily top $400 a month or more.

The solar revolution is here.  You may even witness the disappearance of the power grid in the US as businesses and homes switch to  energy sources such as solar, and generate their own power.  Install solar panels today and ride the wave of change.

Solar Panels and Fun Facts About Them Part 3

Part thre eof our series on solar panel installation explores some more fun facts about them.

What Are Solar Solar Panels Made Of?

What are solar panels made of?  Well, most of them nowadays are made of amorphous polycrystalline silicon.  The beauty of solar panels is that they last  quite a while and are currently 97% recyclable.  And here’s something cool that you may not know about solar panels.  Ever watched a time-elapse film of a plant following the sun?

Tracker solar panels  are designed to follow the sunlight and get the maximum charge off the sun, a great idea copied from nature itself.  But what about solar panels that are fixed rack solar?

Fixed Rack Solar Panels

Let’s face it, if you live in Arizona, you most likely have a building that get’s some sunlight.  A fixed rack solar panel is placed according to Arizona’s position on the globe.  So, you can get maximum sunlight during both the winter and the summer months.  The nice thing about both types of solar panels is where you can put them.

Most people opt for putting them on their roofs, however, a great many apartment complexes and parking garages are placing them on their parking garages instead.  This makes an ingenious double use of space.  For one, it provides power to the building or buildings, and for another it provides shade to people.  If you have lived in Arizona long enough, you know that shade is something to aim for whenever possible, particularly in the summer. Here’s another fun fact about solar power. If you put the right sized mirror on the ground, it can boost the power output of a solar panel by up to 70%! Solar power isn’t just used down here, though.

Solar is used in outer space too. Look at the International Space Station or any satellite if you don’t believe us. It really is the energy of the future. So, what are you waiting for? Why not join the sustainable energy revolution and install solar panels today.

This concludes part three of our series. for more solar panel information, be sure to read part one and part two as well.

Solar Panels and Fun Facts About Them Part 2

Part two of our series on solar panel installation explores some more fun facts about them.

Using Solar Power

Solar Panel Installation | (480) 926-2300
Solar Panel Installation | (480) 926-2300

Even if you’re very old-fashioned, you may not know it yet, but you may already be using solar power.  Both Salt River Project and APS incorporate solar panels at some of their power plants across the valley.  Speaking of solar power plants, did you know there is a huge one out in California? It is impressive, however, there is an even bigger one being built in Arizona, as this article excerpt from Forbes shows:

The project, owned by NRG Energy NRG +1.21% and MidAmerican Solar, sits on 2,400 acres between Yuma and Phoenix. They hired Arizona-based First Solar FSLR +0.35% to build and operate the project, which also uses First Solar’s thin film solar panels that rely on a compound of cadmium-telluride to convert sunlight into electricity.Called Agua Caliente, the project will ship electricity to San Francisco-based Pacific Gas and Electric Co., which signed a 25-year purchase agreement. At maximum production, the project will generate enough electricity for about 230,000 homes. [READ MORE]

And if you think solar power is a passing fad, think again.  In fact demand for solar panels has for the first time in US history is exceeding supply.  All this in just a few short decades since they were released on the market in 1956!  Since there is increased competition in the solar industry, solar panels are also dropping quickly in price.  Giants such as First Solar are basing their headquarters in Arizona.  Solar power has been growing at an explosive rate, with 30% growth projected for the next decade or so.  It makes sense if you think about it, particularly in an environment like Arizona.

Solar Panel Installation and Energy Costs

Arizona is obviously famous for its hot temperatures and the sun.  Arizona is very sunny and a lot of people like to come here particularly during the winter as our state  has about 300 days of sunshine a year.  And during the summer months, the daylight hours last from 5am until 8pm at night.  Solar panels are a lot more powerful than they used to be as well.  The older model solar panels didn’t generate a tenth of the power they do now.  But newer generation panels produce a lot of power with very little space.

So remember, you want to help the planet.  Recycle when you can, and reduce the strain on the power grid.  One way that you can help is to install solar panels today.

Solar Panels and Fun Facts About Them

Solar panels used to be well below most people’s radar.  As a rule, it was the hardcore environmentalist types that installed them, or on the other end of the spectrum, the only other people who could afford them were research labs.  And it used to be that solar panels were very bulky, and almost half a foot thick.  And now it’s not just companies and private individuals that are jumping on the solar bandwagon, but governments as well.  Look at Germany for example.

Solar Panels Fun Facts

Install Solar Panels Today | (480) 926-2300

Germany used to use a lot of energy sources that were either coal powered plants, nuclear, or some other combination thereof, and there was little to no solar panel installation .  However, times have changed considerably.  In fact, 25% of Germany’s power is generated from renewable sources, of which 18% is solar.  This number is going to go up to 50% by 2050. Solar power can be used in a lot of ways. Did you know for example that you can cook your food by using a solar oven? It’s true and it is often a popular science fair exhibit. Solar power isn’t as new as you might think, either.

The ancient Greeks and Romans often situated their homes deliberately facing south so they could use the sun to heat their homes. If you think about it, magnifying glasses were one of the first attempts to use the sun’s power to start fires. And Albert Einstein even came up with a design for a photoelectric power node back in the day. Installing solar panels is just one more step in this history.

Solar Power and Safety

As to why people are considering solar panel installation, part of it is due to the laudable goal of energy independence. It’s estimated that by 2050, a lot of fossil fuels will be depleted to the point of exhaustion. Older nuclear power plants are dangerous and produce toxic waste, and as shown during the Chernobyl incident and Fukushima they can explode with devastating results.  And while thorium nuclear reactors show a considerable amount of promise, as do other fuel sources such as hydrogen.

Solar power isn’t for everywhere, of course.  Areas with a lot of clouds and overcast weather don’t do well with solar. However, technology is advancing considerably, as the demand for solar increases.  And modern solar panels are far more energy efficient than their predecessors are.   But there are several reasons to consider solar for your home or office including tax breaks, making a difference and more.  So give us a call and see if  solar panel installation is right for you.

Commercial Solar Power: Is it Time?

A lot of people that are opposed to commercial solar power throw out a rather depressing number.  0.5%.  That’s the amount of power generated by the power companies in Arizona that comes from solar power.  It’s argued that power companies don’t believe in solar power because it doesn’t work.  Correction, solar power works quite well, and it is one part of a recent trend  towards more renewable energy.  Solar power represents change, and a change that may cause the end of the power grid as we know it.

Sound ominous?  It isn’t.  The way our power grid works is that a few power companies scattered across the US have power plants run by fossil fuels as a rule with  diesel and coal as the biggest sources of power.  Solar power is a stunning example of a trend towards decentralized electricity. If you think a change of this magnitude can’t happen, take a look at mobile phones.  Fifteen years ago or so, a mobile phone was in addition to your home’s landline.  Nowadays a lot of people have then instead of a landline.  And solar power is showing a similar growth patten.  So solar power is starting to achieve more and more prominence, and one area that is seeing a startling upswing is the area of commercial solar installation.

Solar Panels in Business

Using the time frame of a decade, a lot of commercial solar panels have been installed.  Some buildings in fact, have an interesting framework on the outside of them that from a distance just looks decorative, but is in fact, an array of solar cells.  As more demand has gone up, so too has solar technology seen some great new developments.  Now one solar panel that’s only a few inches in size can generate a larger amount of power.  With people’s concerns about the environment increasing, a company gets some good PR when they can legally claim that they are using sustainable energy such as solar. When people approve of a business, they are more likely to do business with that organization.  And if that weren’t enough, look at other things too.

A lot of homeowners are savvy to the idea that they can get tax rebates for installing panels on their roof, but businesses can benefit from these incentives too.  That’s right, both on a federal and a state level, there are several tax breaks for installing solar panels at your business as well as at home.

So, as you see, solar power has started to become a growth industry.  The solar revolution is here, so you have to ask yourself:  is it time to install solar panels for my business?

Solar Panels Part 2: Homeowners and Solar

Part two of a three part series on solar power explores solar panels for homes.

In part one we covered the rise of solar as a viable source of energy.  Part three will cover solar panels for businesses and potential corporate tax breaks.

Should You Install Solar Panels for Your Home?

Install Solar Panels in Mesa | (480) 926-2300

There is a lot of debate on the subject of installing solar panels for your home.  Some people say that you never really make your money back on them.  Others say that you have to wait at least a decade before you do.  Here are some facts to help you cut through all the confusion.  It is a proven fact that energy costs are rising.  Fossil fuel prices are going up as demand is increasing.  Over the past decade, energy costs have risen by a whopping 25%.  Alternative energy sources have to be considered.
Some, like biomass and hydrogen show promise, however, they are still too expensive to be viable.  Living in Arizona, we don’t have easy access to sources like tidal power, and wind power is highly intermittent.  So what is the only viable choice here?  Solar power, of course.

Another reason to consider home solar panels is that there are generous tax breaks and credits for installing them from the federal government.  In addition,  there are additional tax credits in a state with a high solar rating, such as Arizona, as well as cash back incentives.  Sound good so far?

How Many Solar Cells Do I Need?

First off there is a difference between solar panels and solar cells.  A solar panel has several cells.  In addition, the answer to this question depends really on how much electricity you use on a daily basis as well as placement of the solar panels.  The rule of thumb where solar power is concerned, is that  one  solar panel can generate 70 milliwatts per square inch for a total of roughly 350 milliwats per day.  A fairly average home uses about 14000 milliwatts in a 24 hour period, so if you wanted to 100% solar, you’d need 400 solar panels.  Remember though , that not all solar panels are huge.  Some solar panels can be as small as four square inches.

Solar is an energy source whose time has come.  Unlike nuclear energy which  is potentially dangerous, solar panel is safe. So if you want clean and renewable energy,  install solar panels today.

Solar Panels Part 1: Safe and Renewable Energy

Solar panel installation can help you to make a difference in one of the challenges we face in this century. In addition to desertification, water resources, and climate change, there is another problem we have:  sources of energy.  Part two of this series will cover solar power for homes, and part three will cover solar power for businesses.

Solar Power:  The Future?

Install Solar Panels and Save | (480) 926-2300

It’s estimated that fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas will be largely depleted within 50 years.  As we live in a technological society, we need more and more energy sources.  Nuclear disasters such as Chernobyl and Fukushima are still showing devastating effects on the environment.  Living in Arizona, we obviously do not have any access to tidal power, and wind power is at best a limited possibility.  With the water levels in reservoirs dropping, hydroelectric power will start to become prohibitively expensive.  However, we do have abundant sunshine, which is where solar panel installation in Mesa comes in.

The idea of near or total energy independence is very appealing.  With solar panels, you are not as reliant on power companies.  And with energy rates skyrocketing, that is a good thing.  It’s estimated that within the next 5-10 years, the cost of electricity in a three bedroom home will rise by as much as 30%.  And unlike coal power plants, or plants that use nuclear power, solar power is one of the safest sources of renewable energy around.  And solar is on the rise.

Solar Panels are Showing Up Everywhere

Solar panels are popping up on the roofs of corporate centers.  Covered parking awnings at ASU and throughout the Phoenix area are now starting to sport a new addition.  That’s right, solar panels.  Considering that parking awnings are almost always either angled or flat, they are a perfect place for solar.  The same holds true for the roof of a skyscraper. Even some vacant lots are starting to get solar panels.

Instead of looking towards the future with dread, why not look at it as a challenge to be overcome.  One of the challenges that we can beat is new sources of energy.  And solar panel installation is one of the best ways to start.
